FAQ

What is the difference between sea, expedition and river cruises?

  1. Sea cruise ships are bigger than the river ones, so a sea traveler usually explores the ship during the whole voyage. Many people find this process even more interesting than the excursion programs in the ports of call. As a rule, on sea cruise ships there are swimming pools, jacuzzi, sports grounds, SPA treatments, gyms, saunas, theaters and cinemas, casinos, numerous bars and restaurants, and sometimes even skating rinks and climbing walls. At the same time on river cruise ships there are gyms, a bar and a swimming pool too. As for expedition cruises, little ships of ice class with restaurants, one or several bars and some other public spaces are usually provided for travelers.
  2. On sea and expedition cruise ships there are often inboard cabins, i. e. cabins without any windows or portholes, but with enough artificial light. Such cabins are usually cheaper than the ones with a view of the sea. There are no inboard cabins on many river cruise ships.
  3. Ship rocking. Please, pay attention to the fact that rocking on river cruise ships is quite rare, whereas on sea cruise ships it is quite a normal situation, especially when a vessel enters an ocean. However, most modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers that reduce the influence of rocking on passengers. Tourists that are very susceptible to ship rocking should better take special anti motion-sickness drugs with them. Nevertheless, despite the ship rocking, while being aboard you may be absolutely sure of your safety as constructors of the ship and the service personnel have already taken care of this.
  4. As a rule, sea and expedition cruises are organized all year round as they are not seasonal. At the same time, in some countries the navigation season for river cruises is restricted.

ABOUT SEA CRUISES

When shall I get my cruise documents?
All cruise documents are usually sent to your e-mail 2 or 3 weeks prior to sailing.

Does seasickness affect passengers much?
Nowadays many cruise ships are equipped with special stabilizers that prevent rocking of a ship at sea, making a vessel steadier and smoother in motion. Passengers may be sure that they will hardly notice force five gale. And such storms are very rare as shipping companies plan cruise routes in order to avoid problems and to make your voyage as comfortable as possible. Moreover, cruises on modern sea liners are recognized by UNESCO as the safest way of traveling. It is not by chance that every year more that 22 million passengers go on sea cruises, and many of them consider this type of holiday the most appropriate.

What are harbor dues, and is it necessary to tip?
Quite often those who go on sea or river cruises have to pay extra fees apart from cost of accommodation, food and excursions. These additional charges include harbor dues and tips. Harbor dues are usually paid in advance, whereas tips may be given while being aboard (usually the amount of tips is fixed, for example, in the USA it is $ 7-10).

What is your boarding procedure?
After you arrive to a port of departure, you should follow the information signs with the name of your ship on them. Check-in usually starts 3-4 hours and finishes 1-2 hours prior to departure.

Before boarding to a sea cruise ship tourists should take the following steps:

  1. Stick special tags on your luggage; they are given together with the pack of cruise documents or during the check-in process. You should type your name and surname, name of your ship, number of your cabin, date and port of departure on these tags in Latin characters, if not provided for otherwise by the rules of luggage registration of a certain cruise company.
  2. Give your luggage with tags to porters who will deliver it right to the door of your cabin (usually it happens during an hour after a ship departs).
  3. Come to the check-in desk, show your identity card and a cruise voucher.
  4. After all the documents are checked, passengers are given a special magnetic stripe card (Cruise Card/Seapass), that should be used as a key to a cabin, pass to the ship and card for paying for services (excursions, bar, laundry, beauty shop, etc.). To get a Cruise Card you should register your own credit card or place money on deposit in cash.
  5. Cruise of tourists who have missed the boarding is canceled, as a rule, with 100 percent penalty.

Is there any dress code aboard?
Passengers of some sea cruise ships should follow a certain dress code; it means that in some occasions tourists should follow definite rules. For example, one cannot visit a gala dinner wearing sports clothes. Usually you may rent a suit, a tuxedo and other clothing for attending a white tie affair aboard.
At the same time, there are some cruise companies that have no dress code.

Will it be boring if I go on a cruise alone?
Not at all! Modern sea cruise liners offer a wide range of entertainment, different shows, competitions, excursions and interactive workshops. And do not forget about swimming pools, SPA zones, gyms, bars, restaurants, casinos and discos. If you are looking for a more relaxing holiday, then you may use libraries and choose a book or a movie to any taste there. If you are tired of smorgasbord and want a change of scenery, you may have dinner in any specialized restaurant or just order it right to your cabin (this is a paid service).
So you should not be afraid of traveling alone. Why don't you just get rid of stereotypes and enjoy a perfect holiday?

Are animals allowed aboard?
Service animals are welcome on ships, whereas pets are not allowed. You should also pay attention to the fact that some cruise ships have special zones for transportation of animals. To get more information about it, please, contact our managers.

What is a cabin with an obstructed view?
It is a cabin that has a partially or wholly obstructed view due to the ship's structural design or because of a lifeboat that is placed in front of the window.

Cabins for disabled passengers
On many ships there are special cabins that are equipped for disabled passengers.
While booking a cruise you should note if you or your relatives have any diseases, provide the information about their severity level, presence of disability group and about the attendant (if there will be any).

What should I do if I missed the check-in process?
Do, please, pay attention to the fact that a tourist, who has been late for registration, is considered as the one, who missed the boarding, and his/her cruise is to be canceled with 100 percent penalty. In order to prevent such a situation you should contact our managers and ask them to warn a ship's crew that you will try to catch up with the vessel in the next port of call. After that you should get a confirmation, that you are allowed to board on the next port, and go to the port where a ship will moor the next day.
Otherwise administration of a cruise sea liner has right to allow other tourists make use of a free cabin.

Can a passenger be denied boarding a cruise liner?
Yes, if a cruise company, a captain or a doctor of a ship believe that for some reason going on a cruise may be dangerous for you or if your being aboard can bring problems to other travelers. In this case you will have to go ashore in the next port of call. In such a situation a cruise company is not liable for its refusal to transport any passenger or for its removal of any guest. No refunds will be given.

Traveling while pregnant
Traveling is possible if at the end of a cruise a woman will be at less than 24 weeks of pregnancy and if there will be no medical contraindications for going on a cruise.
It is necessary to show a document, written and signed by a supervising physician in English, which contains information about the duration of gestation at the beginning of the cruise (in weeks). This document should confirm that the state of health of a pregnant woman allows her to travel and that there will be no risk for normal course of gestation.

Every cruise company has its own requirements concerning the duration of gestation allowed for going on a cruise, to get this information you may contact our managers.

Items that are not allowed aboard
You must not bring aboard the following items:

a.    Alcoholic beverages:
Sea liners of some companies, such as, e. g., Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line, allow you to take one bottle of wine or champagne aboard, only if you drink these beverages inside your cabin. Otherwise, they are liable to a so-called 'cork tax' of 15-18%. Strong alcoholic drinks are liable to 'cork tax' as well. Mind that you are not allowed to bring them aboard in your luggage. ABOUT EXPEDITION CRUISES

What is an expedition cruise?
Little groups, unique cruise routes, amazing spirit of adventure, magnificent landscapes, true history of geographic discoveries, experienced expedition leaders are integral parts of any expedition tour. The cruise program is highly topical, and very unusual means of transport are used (e. g., elephants, nuclear-powered icebreakers, etc.).

There are sea and river expedition cruises. The main aim of expedition cruises is to visit distant and hard-to-reach areas without giving up acceptable level of comfort, to discover the places and things most people see in travel shows on TV screens only.

Contrary to classic cruise motor ships, little vessels, which are used for expedition tours, can enter even the most hard-to-reach areas. For example, ships of ice class or icebreakers in the Antarctic, including a nuclear-powered icebreaker in the North Pole, are provided for travelers. In the past many of these vessels were used for scientific expeditions, and then they were reequipped so that cruise passengers may feel comfortable aboard. Not many people may take part in expedition cruises; the number of tourists usually varies from 40 to 110. This allows passengers to contact with nature more closely, communicate a lot with each other, make their everyday schedule more flexible and care more about stability of fragile ecosystems.

Is special training necessary?
Your level of fitness does not matter for expedition cruises. Anyone who managed to get to an airplane will cope with debarkation even in the most distant places in the wild. At the same time, those who want to do some physical exercise and get some extreme experience will be able to do hiking in rugged terrain, go rafting and do many other activities.

What clothes and equipment do I need?
Windproof and waterproof clothes as well as good hiking boots will contribute to your comfort in any corner of the world. And it is quite easy to choose clothes for cruises that take place in hot regions. Anyway before the voyage our managers will give you an instruction booklet, which you may use in order to choose the right clothing, prepare photo and video cameras, get the common information about the region as well as its flora and fauna, and overcome all the administrative formalities of distant countries that you are going to visit according to your cruise program.

On some expedition ships you may hire binoculars, however you would better take your own item with you and use it to watch animals. You should also think about quality of photos you are going to make during a cruise and take all the necessary equipment for this.

What levels of accommodation and catering are offered for expedition cruises?
Cabins of motor ships provide necessary comfort for polar voyages; some ships have luxury cabins. During the expedition tourists usually stay in 4-5* star hotels. There are also expedition cruises of economy class; you may ask our managers about them during the booking process.

Experienced chefs work during each cruise; they do their best to cook delicious and various meals for travelers even when they are far away from civilization. And you will also have an opportunity to stick to a diet (vegan, delactosed, etc.), but you should inform our managers about such a necessity at the moment of booking a cruise. Moreover, if you choose a program with ground transportation, you will have no food problems at all; you will be offered a wide range of restaurants in cities and towns you visit.

About daily schedule
As a rule, there is no fixed daily schedule for expedition cruises as many routes are located in distant, hard-to-reach and underexplored regions with extreme weather conditions. Snow, wind, storm or African sun play an important role in implementation of a cruise program. The suggested programs serve as a kind of reference point that informs about your possibilities, i. e. what you can see or visit during the voyage; however, we cannot guarantee that you will visit all of the mentioned places or meet certain animals.

Expedition tourism is based on flexibility, and this makes it unusual and adventurous. All travelers should mind that every day a captain of the ship or an expedition leader makes decisions concerning the next steps to take; while doing it he/she monitors weather and other conditions and is guided by safety requirements as well as by the necessity of letting the travelers explore the region to the fullest.

Are there any additional programs for expedition cruises?
Of course, there are. Many routes start and finish in the most interesting cities of the world. Maybe you would like to stay longer in these places and find out more about local culture. We will be glad to offer you the most popular variants of spending some more time in the region and to organize excursions according to your demands.
